Refugees excluded from Australia’s travel exemption: Thousands of refugees stuck

More than 1,200 refugees granted protection by the Australian government have been denied to travel to Australia since August 2020. 

Department of Home Affairs data obtained by SBS News has revealed more than a thousand travel exemption requests by refugees stuck overseas have been rejected since August last year. From 1 August 2020 to 24 May 2021, 1,251 applications for travel exemptions from a total of 1,826 requests – or 69 per cent – were knocked back, SBS News reported. 

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ multi-country office in Canberra said that the UNHCR asks that all options for the resumption of entry to Australia for refugees visaed for resettlement be explored.
