Migration attempt to Canada: Lankan Tamils handed over to NIA

India’s National Investigation Agency has taken over the probe into the alleged illegal immigration and human trafficking of 38 Sri Lankan Tamils.

With the inputs from Tamil Nadu police, the Karnataka police arrested 38 Sri Lankan Tamils last month while attempting to go Canada from Mangaluru via boat. According to the police, they were landed at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu by boats on March 17.

“In June, we registered the case. Human trafficking angle was also found in the case. All the arrested individuals have been produced before the court. We have been asked to hand over the case to National Investigating Agency by MHA,” said Mangaluru Police Commissioner Shashi Kumar.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu medias’ reports that the Karanataka Police doubted that the arrested Sri Lankan Tamils could have a link with LTTE.
