Victims request IPKF massacre memorial at Jaffna Teaching hospital

Relatives of the victims of Indian army massacre requested the hospital management to construct a memorial inside the premises of the hospital to remember their loved ones.

 

Commemoration was held on last week. In memory of those who were shot dead by the Indian Army, a public flame was lit by the relatives of the victims and wreaths were laid at the portraits of the slain.

The Director, Deputy Director and staff of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital were present at the event.The Indian Army entered the Jaffna Teaching Hospital on October 21, 1987 and 68 people were mercilessly shot dead by the Indian army. Nurses, staffs and patients are killed in this massacre, including Dr, Parimalajagar, Dr. Ganesaratnam, Dr. Sivapathasundaram, Chief Nursing Officer Mrs. B. Vadivelu, and hospital staff, who were being treated there.

Dr T. Sathiyamoorthi, Director of the hospital said that the administration will seek approval from local authorities to construct the memorial since the request has been pending for years.
