A commemorative ceremony was held today (Tuesday, 28 July) at the memorial monument in Talaimannar to mark the bicentenary of the arrival of the Malaiyagam community in Sri Lanka.
The memorial, established in Talaimannar in 2023 under the auspices of the Honourable Malaiyagam Coalition, served as the venue for the tribute, where participants gathered to honour the contributions and history of the Malaiyagam people over the past two centuries.
Members of the Malaiyagam community, civil society representatives, religious leaders, and residents from the Mannar area attended the event. Participants paid their respects by laying floral tributes at the monument in remembrance of the community’s journey and legacy.
The ceremony formed part of the commemorations marking 200 years since the arrival of the Malaiyagam people in Sri Lanka, recognising their historical presence and their contributions to the country’s social, cultural, and economic development.
