The unfulfilled promise of housing scheme: Mannar people suffer

The delay in completing the housing projects sanctioned by Sri Lanka’s National Housing Development Authority has raised safety questions for the families living with teenage girls. The families living in the Jimron Nagar village of Mannar said living in a hut with our girl children is the biggest hurdle.

The houses sanctioned under Former President Maithripala Sirisena were stopped in the foundation stage; we have not seen any progress. Our attempt to build the house turned us into debtors, the affected families told.

“Do we live in thatched huts until we die? During this Corona period, the government asked us to isolate. How do we isolate in this small thatched hut,” they questioned.

The available data said that construction works of nearly 2,900 houses remain unfinished in Mannar District.
