Tamil villagers in Trincomalee facing livelihood crisis

Tamil people who live in ‘Kumburupitiya East Navarcholai,’ a small resettlement village under the Kuchchaveli divisional secretariat division of Trincomalee district, are facing severe livelihood problems.

There are about 550 families in the village. The villagers say they were resettled after the 2004 Tsunami, and they are continuing their life in thatched huts, sheds.

They say that they are daily labourers and live in extreme poverty with their children even without sufficient drinking water.

They expressed their concerns about getting housing facilities. According to them, the government under former President Maithripala Sirisena assured to provide housing facilities for more than 90 families, but the plans dropped after Gotabaya Rajapaksa took power.

The people of the village requests the government officials to provide basic facilities for their village.
