Tamil political prisoner released after 12 years

A Tamil political prisoner who was arrested under Sri Lanka’s notorious Prevention of Terrorism Act and held in jail for 12 years has been acquitted by the Monaragala Magistrate’s Court.

Kathiravelu Kabilan (29), belongs to Chinnapanangad, Akkaraipattu region of Ampara. The family of the Kabilan informed the voice of the voiceless organisation about his release.

He was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act on suspicion of being in touch with the LTTE after the end of the war on 20.05.2009.

On 15.02.2011, after being detained and interrogated by the Terrorist Investigation Department (TID) for more than a year, he was brought before the Magistrate’s Court and imprisoned. However, no charges have been filed against him for the past 12 years.

Following the plea made by Senior Advocate Panchasaram, the court acquitted Kabilan on the grounds that there was not enough evidence to detain him.
