Sri Lanka’s Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) has arrested a Tamilian who deported from Qatar under charges of terrorism.
The 41-year-old Tamilian ‘Pakyathurai Naguleshwaran,’ a resident of Trincomalee arrested at the Mulliyaweli Quarantine Center after completing a 14-day quarantine.
The Sri Lankan media reports claim that the suspect has fled to Qatar in 2019, where he had been engaged in LTTE promotion activities. The government of Qatar had deported him to Sri Lanka after the TID sought the help of Interpol via a Blue Notice to locate and arrest the man in question, the Sri Lankan police spokesperson said.
In a recent statement issued by the International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP), ITJP says, “The ITJP has examined a number of recent cases of abduction and torture of Tamils perpetrated by the Sri Lankan security forces under the government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The organisation says that numerous victims arriving in the UK have been tortured, but the Covid pandemic delayed documenting their testimony. More than half of those interviewed appear to have been picked up because they were involved in campaigning against the election of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and participating in protests by the families of the disappeared,” said.
