Sri Lankan court bars Tamils observing their Heroes’ week

The Mullaitivu District Court yesterday (17) issued a restraining order on 12 people to observe Heroes’ Week in Mullaitivu.

Sri Lankan Police had filed a petition in the Mullaitivu court yesterday naming 12 people seeking an injunction against the conduct of Heroes’ Week. The Sri Lankan judge hearing the case has issued an injunction restraining the 12 from making arrangements for the Heroes’ Week.

The ban has been issued to MPs Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, Selvarasa Gajendran, former provincial councilors MK Sivajilingam, T Ravikaran, Peter Ilancheliyan and T Yogeswaran.It is expected that these restraining orders will be handed over to the concerned people today.

Meantime, the united nation human rights council expressed serious concern about shrinking democratic space; restrictions on public memorialization of victims of war including the destruction of a memorial in Sri Lanka in its resolution which was passed on March 2021.
