Sri Lanka: CID confirms arrest of abducted activist

The Sri Lankan Criminal Investigations Department has confirmed that Consumer rights activist Asela Sampath was arrested in the Pelenwatta area in Piliyandala yesterday. 

Earlier, we have reported that the activist Asela Sampath has been abducted by some 20 unidentified persons in a white Van (NE 0833) around 8.30 pm yesterday (25) after assaulting him and his family members. The abduction has been reported by his daughter, Agra Dinithiri in the social media on the eve of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. 

Sri Lankan Police Media Spokesman, Senior DIG Ajith Rohana says that the activist has been arrested in connection with a false statement made on social media regarding the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

Senior DIG Ajith Rohana further stated that the investigation was carried out after studying all the comments made by various people regarding the relevant videos and statements, the Colombo Page reported.
