SL Healthcare workers urges for scientific lockdown to control Covid-19 spread

Healthcare workers are urging the Sri Lankan government to implement a scientific lockdown to control the Covid-19 cases. They are planning to stage a protest silent protest tomorrow (18) in selected teaching hospitals.

According to The Morning, Government Nursing Officers’ Association (GNOA) President Saman Rathnapriya said that health staff would be participating in the silent protest scheduled to take place in 15 selected teaching hospitals for 30 minutes.

“We urge the Government to go for a scientific lockdown since the B.1.617.2 Delta variant of Indian origin is spreading widely in the country. We consider this as an urgent need,” he said.

“A total of 20,000 Covid-19-positive cases have been reported last week, along with 1,000 deaths. The daily reported number of deaths is around 160 and infected cases around 3,300. This includes four deaths from the health sector, while 1,000 nurses and 5,000 health staffers also became Covid-19-positive,” Rathnapriya said.
