Tamil teenage cricketer Amu selected for England Women’s U19s

British Tamil teenager and professional cricketer Amuruthaa Surenkumar, has been selected for England’s cricket team – Women U19s.

2023 has been an eventful year for the all-rounder from north London, with the latest news announced via the England Cricket Board.

In July, at just 16-years-old, she was awarded her first senior contract with Sunrisers, after three years at their academy.

Amu, as she is known on the pitch, also play county cricket for Middlesex. Her prodigious cricketing talent was spotted by North London CC when she first joined as a 7-year-old.

Born into a Tamil family with ancestral ties to Jaffna, Amu has been selected for England U19 preparation group, with training starting in January. She is a strong contender to tour Sri Lanka with the England Womens U19 team to take on the hosts and Australia in a Tri Series (March 2024-April 2024).

Amu’s love for cricket has been nurtured from a young age. Her father, Siva Surenkumar, played for St John’s College in Jaffna, and holds the record for the most runs in a big match.

England Women Head of Performance Pathways Richard Bedbrook said: “The Tri Series in Sri Lanka will see the group gain valuable development experience of playing in the subcontinent against challenging opposition and we’re really interested to see what learning players and staff can make from the opportunity.
