Sri Lankan police manhandling Tamil MP for remembering Thileepan

The Sri Lankan Police has arrested Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) MP Selvarasa Kajendren while paying his respects at Lt Col Thileepan’s Memorial in Nallur, Jaffna, Northern Province.

During the arrest, the Police manhandled Kajendran and forcefully pushed him into the van. Later, the MP has been released on bail.

Tamil National Alliance’s MP and Advocate M A Sumanthiran condemned Kajendran’s arrest on Twitter.

“I condemn the arrest of Selvarajah Kajenthiran, MP in #Jaffna today while exercising his right to # memorialization on behalf the #TNA,” he tweeted.

Local reports say that the Sri Lankan police have obtained a court injunction at Jaffna Magistrate Court to ban any commemorative events organized to remember Thileepan’s death anniversary.

Thirty-four years ago, LTTE’s Lt Col. Thiyagatheepam Thileepan began his hunger strike on September 15th at Jaffna’s Nallur Kandaswamy Temple in protest against the failure of the Indian government to honour the pledges made to the Tamil people.
