Sri Lankan economy gets another setback

Agence France-Presse are reporting that Sri Lanka’s national carrier has ended direct flights between Sri Lanka and Russia with immediate effect. The airline cited the spiralling cost of insuring the flights between Moscow and Colombo.

Sri Lanka is heavily reliant on tourist income, and Russia is one of the island’s biggest source of tourists.

The Ukraine war and the coronavirus pandemic have disrupted supply chains and boosted the cost of goods globally. In Sri Lanka, however, the external turmoil has only exacerbated a problem that was years in the making.
