Sri Lanka to tie up with China and Russia

Sri Lankan foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena met with the Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Yuri Meteriy and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong at the Foreign Ministry last Wednesday (31).

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister expressed his gratitude to the Governments of Russia and China for the assistance extended to control the Covid-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka. He also conveyed his appreciation over the support for Sri Lanka, at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The Minister met with the Ambassadors of the two countries separately and held discussions at length, on Sri Lanka’s friendly relations and bilateral cooperation with China and Russia.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping renewed his invitation extended to Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to visit China at an early date during a telephone conversation between the two leaders last Monday (29).

The telephone dialogue has been timed in a context where China voted against the UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka.  The phone conversation followed the introduction of the bill to regulate the economic affairs of the Colombo Port City which is a US $ 1.4 billion investment by China.

President Xi responded positively to the request by Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa to assist in the establishment of a technology university in Hambantota.
