Sri Lanka prepares Local govt polls in the first week of January

In Sri Lanka, a Gazette notification inviting nominations for the much-awaited Local Government polls will be issued in the first week of January. As per reports, the Election Commission held a discussion on Thursday with District Secretaries of all 25 District Returning Officers (DROs) for the upcoming polls. Chairman of the Election Commission Nimal Punchihewa said the Gazette notification has been prepared and handed over to DROs who will issue it before the 5th of January 2023.

The EC expects to keep the election expenses to under 10 billion Sri Lankan rupees. The commission said that the election will be held on a weekday. Mr. Punchihewa said the number of officials to be deployed for election duty will also be less than 2 lacks. The nominations will be accepted by DROs on the 14th day of the issue of notice of nomination until noon of the following day.

The polls will feature a mixed electoral system with 60% seats in each authority elected by first past the post method and 40% seats by proportional representation. About 16 million voters will elect councilors for 8327 seats across 340 bodies comprising Pradeshiya Sabhas, Urban Councils, and Municipal Councils.
