Sri Lanka bans Social media freedom

An order has been issued banning all public servants from criticising government policies on Social Media.

In a circular issued this week based on several complaints received on how opinions are raised by certain government officials who unnecessarily challenge on Social Media, Secretary for the State Ministry of Home Affairs N.H.M. Chithrananda.

Accordingly, any public servant violating the order will be taken into a disciplinary inquiry, the Ministry informed.

Recently, Sri Lanka expelled Prof Buddhi Marambe from all his positions in the Ministry on the grounds that he had criticised the Government’s policy about organic fertiliser.
