Release of political prisoners, Thileepan’s demand not yet addressed: Father M. Sakthivel

‘All Tamils detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act should be released’ was one of the demands put forth by Thiyagatheepam Thileepan before 34 years. Ilakku media has asked Father M. Sakthivel, Convener of National Movement for the Release of Political Prisoners, about the demand that the Sri Lankan government did not yet address.

Father M. Sakthivel said that in chauvinism and expanding militarisation, the unconditional release of political prisoners by making political decisions is just a mirage.

“The aim of the chauvinist rulers is not to accept Tamil political prisoners as political prisoners but to suppress the Tamil homeland principle and the right to self-determination. The next goal of the Sri Lankan government is to remove the young generation from Tamil political thinking. That’s why they are not ready to release political prisoners and tighten the Prevention of Terrorism Act, ” he said.

“The current regime in Sri Lanka came to power by saying that there is no ethnic crisis, claiming that only economic and development issues existed. This regime continued to defend the Prevention of Terrorism Act and now enforce the emergency under the guise of Corona.”

“In the era of chauvinism and expanding militarisation, the unconditional release of political prisoners by making political decisions is just a mirage. The Tamil leadership also stands on the side of the government,” Father M.Sakthivel said.
