Rajapaksa’s party supporters death threats to Teachers Union Secretary 

Ceylon Teachers Union’s Eastern Province Secretary Ponnuthurai Udayarupan, who actively involved in the teachers strike have received death threats from the supporters of Sri Lanka’s ruling Podujana Peramuna party. 

“Speaking to the press in #Batticaloa, Wednesday (22), Eastern Province Secretary of Ceylon Teachers Union, Ponnuthurai Udayarupan, said that he‘s received death threats from influential provincial supporters of #SriLanka’s ruling SLPP, for his role in the teachers strike,” JDS tweeted. 

A month ago,  Ceylon’s Teachers Union, Teachers’ Association of Eastern University and civil society groups jointly organised the protest in Batticaloa against the Sri Lankan government proposed Kotelawala National Defence University (KNDU) Bill. The Sri Lankan students, teachers community worries that the bill could pave the way for privatization of the higher education sector and militarisation of universities.
