The Sri Lankan government can try to bring reconciliation by releasing Tamil political prisoners, Father M. Sakthivel, coordinator of the National Organization for the Release of Political Prisoners, said in a conversation with Ilakku media.
“Corona deaths in Sri Lanka are increasing day by day. The parents of political prisoners are worrying about their detained children. Due to the age factor, the parents are distraught, as they cannot see them. Therefore, they are prone to corona infection. The Sri Lankan government will not understand such a state of mind. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has recently formed a committee under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. The President said, based on the advice of that committee, he takes the further decision,” Father M. Sakthivel said.
Father M. Sakthivel further says that the Sri Lankan President has formed this committee to deceive the international community, as the UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva going to take place soon.
“We, therefore, demand the release of those arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. The Sri Lankan government can try to bring reconciliation through the release of Tamil political prisoners.”
