Illegal sand mining in the Eastern Province for Maldives island

Tamil National Alliance Batticaloa District MP Chanakya Rasamanikkam alleged that the sand is being illegally mined from the various places of Eastern Province to sell the sand to build an island in the Maldives.

While speaking at a Sri Lankan Parliament on Tuesday (September 07), he said that those behind this illegal activity are a Minister from Sri Lanka Freedom Party, MPs from the SLPP, and supported by the governor.

Sri Lankan Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera denied the allegation and challenged that ‘If the allegations have been proven, I am ready to step down from the ministry and the post of MP.’

Following the allegations made by TNA MP Chanakya, Eastern Province Governor Anuradha Yahampath has ordered an independent inquiry on illegal sand mining in the Eastern Province.
