Australia issues bridging visas to Tamil refugee family

Today, the Australian government has   issued bridging visas to Priya- Nadesalingam, an Eelam Tamil refugee family. The temporary visas will allow them to work and study on the Australian mainland.

The family has spent more than three years in Christmas Island offshore detention after their visas expired in 2018. Recently, Tharnicaa, the youngest child of the family medically evacuated from Christmas Island and taken to Australia.

Australia’s Immigration Minister Alex Hawke announced that he had issued the Tamil family with three-month bridging visas.

“This decision allows three members of the family to reside in the Perth community on bridging visas while the youngest child’s medical care, and the family’s legal matters, are ongoing,” he said in a statement.
