Activist Sockanathan Yoganathan aka TRO Nathan passes away due to COVID-19

Sockanathan Yoganathan, Executive Director of Center for Child Development (CFCD), widely known as TRO Nathan, passed away today at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital due to COVID-19.

Center for Child Development statement:

“It is with deep regret that we inform the untimely demise of our Executive Director Mr. Sockanathan Yoganathan today (5 July’21) in the early hours of 3.30 at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. He was unfortunately a victim of COVID 19.

Center for Child development is a leading National NGO in the North which is implementing projects for UNDP, USAID(IDEA), USAID(SCORE) War Affected People’s Association (WAPA), Belgium, TECH Outreach, Malaysia, Child First-UK, Ceylon Student’s Education Fund (CSEF), Australia and a few other donors. The backbone of CFCD and the main pillar of the organization had been Mr. Yoganathan who has been known for his genuine interest for the affected communities.

He constantly maintains contacts with appropriate donors to seek assistance and improve the living conditions of the affected and marginalized people during and after the war.
He has been the sole character to make CFCD as a model in the North through his dedication, hard work, sincerity and honesty. The important aspect is that for all this he has never accepted anything in return but worked throughout on an honorary basis.
Mr. Yoganathan is one who was instrumental in organizing and formulating the Council of Non-Governmental Organizations (CNGOs) of Jaffna District in 1990 which rendered maximum service to the displaced population at that time.
The last words that Mr. Yoganathan uttered while at the hospital are “please work together for the betterment of the people”. Thus, we can imagine his high hopes to assist the affected and under privileged population at all times. This has to be the primary task of all those at CFCD now and in future to “work for the people”.

We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to his beloved wife, daughter and the rest of the close family members at this time of great grief. Let us all pray together for his soul to rest in peace!” said in the statement.
