Gajendrakumar Calls for Special Committee on Eelam Tamil Issues

Member of Parliament Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam has stated that a proposal was submitted to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to establish a special committee dedicated to addressing issues affecting Eelam Tamils.

Speaking during an interview with a private media outlet, Ponnambalam said that the proposed body would include representatives from political parties, members of Parliament, legislators, and individuals with expertise in matters relating to the Tamil community.

According to Ponnambalam, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister expressed his willingness to establish such a committee and indicated that future actions would be guided by its recommendations and findings.

Among the issues discussed was the discovery of the mass grave at Chemmani, which has once again drawn attention to allegations of human rights violations committed during Sri Lanka’s civil conflict. Ponnambalam emphasized the need for an independent international criminal investigation into alleged injustices committed against Tamils.

The discussion also focused on the long-standing dispute involving fishermen from northern Sri Lanka and the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Ponnambalam stated that a request had been made to create a mechanism through which the matter could be addressed through dialogue and cooperation rather than confrontation.

He further highlighted the difficulties experienced by Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in India and urged the Tamil Nadu administration to take steps to address their concerns and improve their living conditions.

The proposal reflects continuing efforts by Tamil political representatives to seek broader regional and international engagement regarding issues affecting Tamil communities in Sri Lanka, including accountability, human rights, rehabilitation, and economic development.

Ponnambalam maintained that constructive cooperation among political leaders, civil society organizations, and affected communities would be essential in finding sustainable and peaceful solutions to these long-standing challenges.
