A court sentenced ex-police chief Pujith Jayasundara and ex-defence secretary Hemasiri Fernando to death over the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings that killed 279 people at three churches and three hotels.
Both were convicted of negligence for getting a warning the night before that suicide bombers were about to hit, and doing nothing with it. It’s likely symbolic since Sri Lanka hasn’t executed anyone since 1976. A darker theory still hangs over the case.
A former intelligence chief was arrested this year on conspiracy charges, and a whistleblower says the bombings were allowed to happen for political gain. Two days after the attacks, a candidate launched his campaign on national security and rode it to the presidency. Something tells me this goes far above two officials.
