Tamil activists staged a protest outside the UK Prime Minister’s Office on 26 July, calling for greater international action to secure justice for victims of Black July and the Chemmani massacre.
The demonstration was jointly organised by the Movement for Self-Determination of Tamil Eelam (MSDTE), the Tamil Eelam People’s Association for International Justice, and several other Tamil organisations.
Protesters urged the UK government and the international community to support independent investigations into alleged war crimes and human rights abuses committed during Sri Lanka’s civil conflict. Demonstrators also called for accountability for the Chemmani mass graves, where ongoing excavations have renewed international attention on allegations of enforced disappearances and unlawful killings.
The rally also commemorated Black July, the anti-Tamil pogrom of July 1983, during which hundreds of Tamils were killed and thousands displaced in Sri Lanka. The violence is widely regarded as a defining event that accelerated the country’s decades-long civil war.
Organisers said the protest sought to raise awareness among British policymakers and international institutions, urging them to pursue justice, accountability, and recognition of the rights of Tamil victims.
The UK government had not publicly commented on the demonstration at the time of publication.
