Rep. Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, has requested that FIFA President Gianni Infantino testify before Congress and provide documents related to FIFA’s relationship with President Donald Trump and his administration.
In a letter to Infantino, Raskin requested records including:
- Communications between FIFA and the Trump administration.
- Details of any gifts, benefits, or financial arrangements involving Trump, members of his family, or associates.
- Documents related to FIFA’s decision to establish offices in Trump Tower.
- Records concerning the FIFA Peace Prize awarded to Trump.
- Information regarding controversy surrounding 2026 FIFA World Cup ticketing.
Raskin also questioned the U.S. Department of Justice’s decision to drop portions of a long-running FIFA corruption prosecution, suggesting the move warrants scrutiny over whether FIFA received favourable treatment from the Trump administration.
The request comes as Republicans control the House of Representatives, meaning Democrats currently lack the authority to compel testimony or issue subpoenas through committee investigations.
However, Raskin warned that if Democrats regain control of the House following the next midterm elections, the Judiciary Committee could launch a broader investigation into FIFA’s relationship with the Trump administration, including the possible use of subpoena power to obtain testimony and documents.
Neither FIFA nor the Trump administration had publicly responded to Raskin’s request at the time of publication. The Justice Department has also not indicated that its prosecutorial decisions were influenced by political considerations.
The development adds another layer of political scrutiny as the United States prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.
